Andy Devine dead: Fans pay tribute to Emmerdale star

The actor, best known for playing Shadrach Dingle, died on January 27 this year, according to reports.

Why he left Emmerdale? In 2010, Andy left Emmerdale after his character Shadrach was killed off in an emotional storyline related to alcohol abuse.

Following the sad news, many fans are now sharing messages on social media, paying tribute to the actor:

About Devine:  Devine served in the Royal Navy in the 1960s before turning his hand to acting.

He made his first appearance on Emmerdale in 2000 as Shadrach – the alcoholic father of characters Chas and Cain – and appeared on-and-off the show for a decade.

Tributes began flooding in on social media following his tragic passing. One Twitter user said: "Sad news, RIP Andy Devine. Brilliant actor."

A Great Actor: Devine also played a Draconian Guard in the Doctor Who story Frontier in Space, as well as Bernard in Channel 4’s Queer as Folk.

Another user said:  "Sad to read the news Andy Devine has died. Back in January it seems. Best known as #Emmerdale’s Shadrach Dingle, he played Betty’s wedding photographer in a 1995 episode of Coronation Street.
